Intervention

My name is Heather and I'm an internet addict.

Seriously. We went a few days without a computer last week. I couldn't believe how many times I thought of that little machine that seems to suck up so much time. Can you call it a machine?

I'm not saying it's all bad. During those days I needed it for budgeting, finding an address, calculating postage, finding a particular Joseph F. Smith quote, checking some PTA business, Miles' homework, requesting a book from the library, etc. Then of course there were the emails, blogs, and FB entries that I knew were piling up. The list could go on and on.

The internet is a great resource. If you'll excuse the truism, a wealth of information at your fingertips. Unfortunately it's also a vacuum. Honestly, hours could go by and I wouldn't even realize it. In fact, they do. Right now I should be at the grocery store. I mean really, how long can a family go without cheddar cheese?

I have yet to go through the emails and blog posts that have piled up. The thought of it is a bit overwhelming and consequently I've avoided the computer altogether for a few days. If this is what it is becoming than I need to rethink things. Do a priority check. Do I really need to read every post? Are my friends going to think I'm disloyal for not following their blog meticulously? Do my children know that the dream they had last night or the funny thing that happened at school is more important to me?

Now, if you'll excuse me. I've got to run to the grocery store.

Oh Heather, I hear ya. It has been pretty bad for me too these last couple of weeks with my boys sick and then the freezing weather.

The internet has become my window to the rest of the world lately. I cannot wait for spring.

And then I will still need to look up addresses and maps to all the places that I am going to go when it's warmer. And phone numbers of the people who are going with me. And Facebook to remind them ... and .....

Strangely, lately, I have SO not been interested/addicted to the computer. I go days or weeks without checking blogs and I'm not addicted to Facebook, so that right there saves me many hours. I understand about following friends blogs, so I just decided if something strikes my fancy, I'll comment, but I don't have to comment on every post of everyone I know. That is when hours go by. I do find myself searching craft blogs for hours at night when Joe's on call. I do get sucked into those! But I've never gone without cheddar cheese in our house...we could all die without cheese (it's our main source of nutrition around here)!

no we don't think your disloyal for not reading every little thing going on in ourlives that's posted on the blog.

but you still read my blog everyday,... right?:)

I SO hear you. Here I am...I should be sleeping and I thought," Wow, I haven't checked blogs forever...I'm missing out, I better check 'em out now!" Yikes.

When we first moved here, the moving company lost our computer monitor. I felt lost, but I also felt free! I didn't feel obligated to make a blog post. Well, I felt obligated to record some of the family things, but I was glad that I couldn't! I have been a little too attached to the computer these days, too. It's all that cold weather!
